Vendor to Watch: Breadware
More than almost any previous networking technology, the Internet of Things lends itself to small-batch product development by integrators. For years, some integrators resold network-attached storage devices while others customized and private-labeled them. That same attitude in the IoT world means creating a sensor, monitor, or actuator device to do a specific function to best serve your customers.
But doing it all yourself includes diving into software development, hardware design, data acquisition, and data analysis. Normally, these functions only exist in regional or national integration firms, leaving smaller firms high and dry. But with Breadware’s help, anyone with an IoT product idea can easily find the assistance they need to plan, design, engineer, and market IoT products.
Daniel Price, CEO, and co-founder, along with COO and co-founder Daniel deLaveaga, previously worked in industrial design for another company. “We kept finding companies wanting to make smart and connected products, meaning IoT, and we were reinventing the wheel each time. So, we created Breadware,” Price says.
Founded as a specialized product development firm with a focus on the new-at-the-time breed of products that connect to the internet, Breadware’s headquarters are in Reno, Nev. Other offices include two in California, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and a programming group in Bangalore, India. It currently has about 30 employees. The company has worked on a few hundred IoT products already and has helped push over 10 million IoT units of some kind out into the world.
“We want to be your trusted source for business planning, developing, and launching of IoT products,” says Price. “Very few companies have all the pieces for that jigsaw puzzle.” Some of those pieces include software development practices and hardware development methodologies, along with launch logistics and marketing.
The new Breadware Marketplace includes more than 50 IoT service provider firms, all experts in one or more areas crucial for IoT success. A Breadware team will do everything from introducing you to potential suppliers to managing the complete planning, design, manufacturing, and distribution process. “We are able to have a high success rate because we know the right partners to help you in each area,” adds Price.
Some industries Breadware focuses on include medicine, sports, smart homes, and smart buildings. “There’s lots of activity in the HVAC area with smart sensors to monitor all types of processes,” says Price. “Other examples are snow melters for roofs and sidewalks on commercial buildings, waste management, and even alerts about replacing toilet paper in large facilities like airports.”
Price hopes to work more and more with managed service providers. “MSPs matter because they’re familiar with the rules of their region. We’re starting a pilot program for them. Firms pay us only if they get business through the marketplace.” Those fees go down to as low as 5% with volume, and the costs are on the seller side, not the companies building the IoT devices.
To lure MSPs, Breadware offers multiple information resources, including studies and advice from service firms. Proof-of-concept stages can be done quickly thanks to the rapid prototyping abilities of Breadware’s partner companies. Often new products are offshoots of existing products modified for slightly different parameters.
Some industries Breadware works in are new to the concepts of security and compliance. Waste management and HVAC firms, for example, never had to include these considerations in their operations before, notes Price. “We like to be involved so we can help companies follow best practices. We try to make people aware of what they should be aware of. There’s lots of noise in IoT with competing platforms, security, and so on, and we help them figure all that out.”
